Angelina Jolie was all smiles with Knox and Vivienne when she brought them to visit Brad on set, but it doesn’t look like she’s making any plans to fly a space ship – much to Alfonso Cuaron’s disappointment.
According to Cinema Blend, Cuaron is currently only interested in getting Angelina to star as an astronaut trying to make her way back to Earth solo. Unfortunately for him, Angelina isn’t interested in the role. She has her Bosnian love story film to concentrate on, promotions for The Tourist, and an interest in Maleficent and Cleopatra.
I think the main reason she’s turning down the role is because she only has so much professional time to spare and has to choose the ones that are most important to her. On the other hand, I have also heard rumors that Angelina might think that the role isn’t well developed enough, that it focuses too much on the action but not enough on the character development. I don’t know how true that is though.
In the meantime the debate is on as to who could replace Angelina in the role; it currently has Robert Downey Jr. on board but his role is nowhere near as central to the storyline as the female lead. Apparently they’ve had interest from actresses such as Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson, Sandra Bullock, and Olivia Wilde among others, but Cuaron isn’t as enthusiastic.
Who do you think could take on the role? I’m a bit of a space fanatic myself and wouldn’t mind seeing Angelina Jolie playing an astronaut but I hope they won’t shelve the whole film if she doesn’t sign on. I think that with Salt having so much success with a female in a strong lead action role, it’s a perfect time for Hollywood to start setting more women forward to follow in Angelina’s footsteps. There’s no reason for women to only play victims or love interests.
If I can’t have Angelina Jolie in this film I wouldn’t mind seeing someone like Charlize Theron, Sandra Bullock, or maybe even Milla Jovovich in the role. Who are your suggestions? It’s been awhile since we’ve had a discussion post so let’s talk about this!
One word of caution: I’m still out in Halifax and right as I type now Hurricane Earl is barreling his way up the coast and is expected to make landfall early Saturday morning. I’m not too worried about dangers but we might lose power so if you comment, get stuck in moderation, and I don’t get to it anytime soon, please forgive me but I may have no electricity to get online! Let’s hope that we can have a fun discussion without too many moderated comments!

As I said earlier, not something I think I would be interested in. Im not really into sci-fi.
Olivia Wilde is alright but I am so used to seeing her in House that “Thirteen” is all I picture her as I’m afraid. I do like Charlize Theron so maybe she would be good for it. No on Sandra. For some reason I don’t picture her in the role.
I live in Massachusetts, but not in an area that will be badly affected by the storm. We are just due to get rain, and a lot of it. I hope no people are harmed in this.
I think for her to have turned it down has to be more than just one thing,I read the shoot would take like six months.I would think that would be a no no for her considering she has six kids to take care of that is a long time away from the family, plus the shoot would be mainly on her because downeys role is supporting.
That would mean long hours on set mostly everyday,Next Brad’s schedule we know he has projects too.Mostly I am glad it’s not all about the money for her it’s things that she believes in whether it be her directing or cleopatra or all the others, those may not Scream blockbuster but that’s what she believes in and at the end of the day she will feel one hundred percent better.Good for her it is not always about money and wanting to be on the forbes list every year.
I do think there was more reasons than one, too. Bosnian movie, motherhood, Brad’s filming schedule, Cuaron’s script etc etc…
Making Bosnian movie is probably very important thing to her privately and artistically. Making this kind of movie is not easy in various meanings. I think she is very lucky to find a partnership with great producer like Graham King. He originally planned shooting Dicaprio’s Viking movie this fall but it was canceled because of the director Mel Gibson’s misconduct. So that incident gave him enough space and time for making Bosnian movie with her.
She will be very busy coming several months with this movie. Pre-production, shooting in 2 countries and filming 4 seasons of Bosnia, post-production etc…
And about her replacement:
Charlize Theron is my best choice, too. But she will start shooting MadMax Fury Road next spring and it will overlap with Gravity’s start. What’s more worse: Cuaron’s agent and Theron’s agent are like Palestine and Israel.
ok. as i said before i’m a fanatic of this movie. one because the story is great (although as much said the character is not yet developed) next is i also like Alfonso Cuaron (i’m an HP fanatic, so for me he did a good job in HP movie, Children of Men in 2006 and A Little Princess in 1995).
on the reason why i’m one of those people who wanted Angie in this movie is because its been so long since she did a sci-fi movie, i think Cyborg 2 and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (correct me if i’m wrong),, seeing her in a new Sci-fi movie would be great, and its not just seeing her as an astronaut but i think if they developed the character more of Angie being an astronaut trying to reach the mother boat haven of the International Space Station to get back to Earth to see her daughter and not just focusing on action scenes would be great. plus Downey and Angie in a movie is a partnership i want to see too.
next on my opinion about why Cuaron really want Angie for this movie is because i think this movie would be his major movie break! and Angie doing well with SALT and next with The Tourist is something. she’s one of those actress who is worth the pay!
next if they can’t really have Angie, i don’t like Sandra Bullock for this. i can’t imagine her playing the role, its weird for me, dunno why.. maybe i got so used to her as a funny and dramatic actress. ScarJo is ok for me, Blake Lively is a big NO more than Sandra. And Charlize Theron and Milla Jovovich are the ones for me if Angie will not really play the role. Milla did a great job in Resident Evil and is a veteran in Sci-fi movies..
But of all these, I understand on why Angie turned it down. As much as i wanted her to be in this movie, I much more like to see her directing her Bosnian Love-War movie, playing Maleficent and Cleopatra. And another, she worked so hard this year, its Brad turn to work now. They do take turns in working. So maybe after her directorial debut, she would take a rest and just be Mommy in pyjamas with her cute and adorable kids..
I’m told the studio tested or made approaches to actresses including Sandra Bullock and Natalie Portman (word around town is the studio’s intrigued with both), Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, Blake Lively. Warner Bros made a second overture to Jolie, but she just passed for a second time.
*****
So Deadline Hollywood’s reliable journalist Mike Fleming wrote. Because of its $80mil budget Warner is very careful.
So what is required ?
1. global star power that will gain more than $200mil global box office
2. acting talent (with expressive eyes in space suit) and physical capability in zero gravity
3. intelligent and calm look as astrronaut’s
4. age around 30
I forgot to add one more condition
5. tough and strong as Evelyn Salt. She is a survivor.
kimmy, Fox2000 also planned shooting Kay Scarpetta fall of 2011 but may be it was their wishful thinking. Movie studios are scrambling for her. That’s why GK Films leaked Unforgiven project to Fleming a few days before Fleming wrote Gravity Update. It was almost said ‘she is ours’
sunny – thanks for Mike Flemming update.. i think Mike too wanted her, hahaha! all those 5 requirements fits Angie!
geez.. to many people wanted her! she got 6 films ahead based on the old reliable IMDb! Cleopatra, The Bosnian Love-War movie, Maleficent, Kay Scarpetta, Gucci Biopic and Serena.. and yeah the rumored Unforgiven project with RPattinson name also attached on it.. wow! All people are into her,, wow! It’s like she’s the only actress in town, haha!
kimmy,it’s my thought and not Fleming. His first report on Gravity was 3 weeks ago. I meant ‘update’ for his newest report on the film.
Yes, 5 requirements look as if tailored for Angie.
Charlize Theron fills 4/5 but she lacks box office appeal. Milla Jovovich can do action as much as Angie but she fills only half of 5.
And about her future projects. Gucci and Serena will be long on shelves. Gucci is Ridley Scott’s 1/50 projects. I suppose Serena has script and direcotr but failed catching financiers ( historical drama is hard to find financiers these days). Maleficent’s director Tim Burton has more urgent projects somewhere else.
None of Salt2 nor Unforgiven nor Scarpetta nor Unforgiven nor Cleopatra has finished script writing and no directors attached to these projects. So I’m waiting one of writers of these projects finishes writing.
Sherry, I agree with you. Angie probably turned down Gravity at least partially because of the other movies she’s working on/interested in right now.
And I can’t explain why, but I see Milla Jovovich taking over the lead for Gravity!
sunny – oh,, sorry.. i thought it was Flemming’s.. haha!
Rachel Weisz To Grab ‘Gravity’?

“I grew up in the UK surrounded by movies and TV shows about spies — James Bond, ‘MI-5.’ But really I just try and channel my inner Angelina Jolie.”

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ is known for her onscreen ability to sneer and kick ass, and both skills are taken full advantage of in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, which opens today. ……
You were talking about Battle: Los Angeles. What other projects do you have coming up?
“Right now I’m just writing my butt off. When I was working with Robert, I was like, holy snap, this guy really understands the masculinity and femininity balance of one person. That is something that only a handful of people in this industry can see the potential of. I feel like there’s a type of girl that I’d like to really bring forth and give her a voice in movies and she doesn’t exist in films. You look in the eighties and it was this big movement for the working-class girl, 9 to 5, with Dolly Parton, and then you see this massive movement for the independence of the girl. Then, all of a sudden in the nineties, the girl’s strong. In all these sci-fi movies you see people like Linda Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver. Then, all of a sudden, the Angelina Jolie type comes out and breaks all of these rules where if you’re tough, you’re supposed to be butch-y, you’re supposed to be this strong character, like the kind of characters that I play. She broke those rules by being beautiful and sexy and still has that alpha-masculine attitude. And then you see someboy like Johnny Depp. His face is so beautiful, you’re thinking, “Wait a minute.” This massive shift going on between men and women where you find a metrosexual type of guy and then the geek is taking over for the alpha male who used to do all the action flicks. It’s no more Stallone, now it’s Orlando Bloom. There aren’t a lot of directors that have captured that for the woman. It’s either one way or the other. Either you’re the cynical, really smart friend in Juno, or you’re like the incredibly tough masculine girl who dies in every movie like Michelle Rodriguez. The closest thing to balance that we’ve seen is the parts that Angelina Jolie play, and a couple of other actresses. I think that we just need more of it, that’s all. So I’m going to write it. I’m going for it. That’s what I got into the business for ten years ago. I just plan on executing that now. Now that I have finished my partying and I finished learning about the industry, I think I’m ready to get my hands dirty.”
I guess she is busy with The Tourist, and an interest in Maleficent and Cleopatra therefore she is not showing any seriousness regarding becoming an astronaut.
Choice is with her only……………….
Undeniably, AJ is the most sought-after actress, if not the most sought-after moviestar in the whole world today. Besides the bankability factor, it’s the talent & strong screen presence why she is always being considered for every film there is. The whole package: brilliant performance, beauty, appeal & viewers’s impact She is also a very intelligent performer who is said to challenge her directors with her sorts of questions on some scenes of her movies. She is now in her moment that she chooses wisely & money is NOT anymore the main consideration at all. She may fail on some projects (as moviemaking is a risk) BUT her every performance always imoresses the public or more often than not is the saving grace of the film.
It is nice to know that she gets to apply her knowledge in SCREENWRITING & DIRECTING besides ACTING of course. Her artistic side is now expressed in her own terms, ways & time.
Hence, I am excited & supportive to all endeavors & interests she is taking…be it in her humanitarian works, family moments & career decisions.
I do hope they find someone and do Gravity. Like Salt, girls need more movies showing them. My grandaughter 4, says that when she grows up she wants to be a “spacegirl”.
Producers of the films which they want Angelina to be on it have to really make a script that would lure her to accept it. Nowadays, she is very particular with the script more than anything else. I could imagine the many scripts of possible movies she & her manager receive every day just to get AJ’s services as an actress.
So, it’s in AJ’s liking of a script that she can do a certain project.
Just a heads’ up to everyone. Hurricane Earl has slammed into Nova Scotia and it’s making its way straight up the Eastern coast. We already have high winds and rain right now and in a couple of hours it will pass over the Halifax area (which is where I am now). People are already losing power left and right so I may lose power where I am as well. I’ll be back as soon as I can but in the meantime I’m just riding out the hurricane, staying dry, and hoping for the best.
I’ll be updating as often as I can over on my personal Twitter account if anyone is interested – http://twitter.com/sherina
Anyone else in this area – stay safe!
Sherry, I hope you and your family will be safe. I haven’t checked the news yet so I have no idea how much damage Earl has caused. I just hope no one was hurt in this.
Sherry, Hope you and your family stay safe. These hurricanes can be very scary. I went through a few when I lived in Puerto Rico. As for Angie, I believe she has a lot on her plate and can’t say yes to every thing offered to her.
Sherry, I hope you and your family will be safe.
be safe Sherry!!! u r in our thoughts and prayers!!
I hope you and your family are well and safe, Sherry. And that Earl will leave without major damage.
I think Milla Jovovich would be cool to be in this movie.
Sherry – be safe and take care over there! Hope Earl will leave fast and no major damages done. God Bless!
Sherry, hope everything is ok and you and family are safe and sound. It’s pretty hard to think in a person who can replace Angelina for the role! For me Alfonso would have to surprise us with the actress, I can’t think of any
Jolie worth her salt in spy thriller
But will a feminist lead in a ‘skop, skiet and donner’ convince fans?

There are quite a few spoilers in the above link, but I was curious to know what others think of the article.
rachel weisz could play opposite george clooney in this movie even sandra bullock is a good choice but rachel replaced sandra .
rachel and george clooney could make a good couple .
rachel weisz could hav played in blind side instead of sandra bullock opposite george clooney as leigh anne tuohy
Charms: I enjoyed the article above. Thank you for sharing.
Mary: I agree with you, I think the director, Alfonso needs to find or pick who he thinks would be the best actress for Gravity. One reason I think directors like Angelina so much, is that she is so good; and that makes the directors job easier. I have directed a variety of plays for community theater over the years; and my opinion is a good director should be able to cast the right person and then develop the character with actor.
One final point from the previous thread. I also think that the one picture is of Knox.
Haha well we all think a lot of things.
Sherry, please let us know that you are ok. Haven’t heard anything from you in a while.
Charms – We’re fine! It was a pretty big storm but most of the damage was in the form of trees and branches coming down, and a lot of people lost power. We were lucky, we didn’t lose power where we are at all.
I wrote a bit about it and posted some photos and a video over here if you’re curious: http://andromeda.qc.ca/2010/09/06/he-rocked-us-like-a-hurricane/
I haven’t had a chance to be online much because after the storm passed we had a party here (we stay with my husband’s cousin and he was having a deck party), and then yesterday we were out all day visiting friends. Today we’re off to spend the day with my sister and brother-in-law. Busy busy!
I am glad you are all safe Sherry. Thanks for the link.
By the way, I was also interested in what you had written about yoga on the beach. I was wondering how much yoga really helps the body?
Today Angelina is headed to Pakistan. Great Lady!

Glad you and your family are safe Sherry!!!
As for Angie in Gravity,I like space films but I just can’t see Angie playing an astonaut!Of cource she is sooo talented she can play anything, but I don’t know why I just agree with her choice not to mae this movie!I think Cleopatra is better!JMO of cource!
As for another choice for the part.I think Charlize Theron is good for it!I like her!
P.S.This just shows how big is Angie’s star power!!!People and studios really want to make movies with her!!!A true A-list actress!!!
It seems Jared removed the thumbs up/down system. Now we all have the pleasure of seeing the trash from trolling lowlifes again. :/
Thank god this is moderated.
Angelina will bring the focal point on Pakinstan, in which the media has ignored. Thank you Angelina!
I think Mila would be good in anything. A second pick would be Kate Beckinsale.
Natalie Portman got the role now. I heard it might be oscar worthy.
Mk04, wow! it’s great you direct plays, I love theater!
